Why does my tongue hurt when I eat fresh pineapple?
Fresh pineapple has bromelain, which is the mixture of two protein-digesting chemicals. Your tongue, and lips as well as the tissue inside your mouth is made of protein which the bromelain can and does digest. YIKES!
1. Can you eat too much pineapple? Too much is relevant, meaning just how much pain can you endure. Eating pineapple affect some people more than others. It can definitely irritate your lips, tongue and lining inside your mouth. Also, pineapple contains acid which adds to the damage.
2. Does the bromelain digest your stomach and intestines? No, because these organs have protective lining.
