The human brain can more easily remember meaningful information. This explains why kids can sing every word of a song they like but have a difficult time learning information for a math or science test. But then there are lots of things we might be interested in and cannot seem to have instant recall on the information. Educators have long used a memory trick. In fact, I still use a memory trick to list the rainbow colors in order from the top to the bottom.
Memory device is a better description and it really isn’t magical, but it is very helpful. The device is called a mnemonic, which is actually any technique you use to remember stuff.
For the rainbow colors, the mnemonic that I use is the name: Roy G. Biv.
Each letter of the name is the first letter of a color. R = Red, O= Orange, Y=yellow, G=green, B=Blue, I = indigo, V=Violet
