A FREE set of blank shapes that can be used with students to help them to create mobiles. Mobiles can be made with science concepts, vocabulary, etc. They are a lot of fun and a fun way to learn about about science topic! The shapes from Smart Chick can be printed on white or colored card-stock. The Free shapes are not colored.
How to Make a Mobile
The video below gives one way of preparing a mobile, but the fun is to use your imagination in hanging the pieces so that they balance.
|Janice VanCleave’s Gravity: Spectacular Science Projects|
An object or group of objects, such as a mobile, always hangs so that its center of gravity (CG) is in line with or below the point of suspension (pivot point-where it is supported)
The diagram of the balancing hammer belowis a still shot from the video. As long as the center of gravity of the system (yardstick, string, hammer) is in line with the pivot point (where the system is supported) it will balance.
