How to Make Butter

Making butter is a type of  physical change in which materials in a mixture are separated.

FYI: There are also chemical changes in the structure of the fat. This is a more advanced study which can be viewed HERE.

The video is just too cute not to watch. It shows children shaking the jar of cream until it turned to butter.

Hints for You to Make Butter :

1. Use a plastic jar, just in case it is dropped.

2. Pour the whipping cream into the jar and after sealing with the lid. Point out that the whipping cream is a liquid.

3. Kids can take turns shaking the jar.

FYI: Reduce the shaking time by allowing the jar of whipping cream to sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes.

4.When the butter forms it will start sticking to the sides of the jar.  Separate the butter and buttermilk by pouring off the liquid, which is buttermilk.

5. Spoon the butter into a bowl, and then cover the butter with water. Squeeze the butter a few times to wash out any trapped buttermilk. Point out that the butter is a solid.

6. Discard the water in the bowl, and then lightly sprinkle salt over the butter. Squeeze  the butter to blend in the salt.

7. Prepare a treat, such as butter on crackers.
