How to Teach Using a Big Book
I love the video below. It is so obvious that the lady loves to read to children. The teaching strategies she presents are applicable for any age-level or curriculum. Well–maybe a bit of adjustment might be needed for older kids–or not.
I taught high school chemistry classes once dressed as a clown. UUM! I also dressed as a black rabbit that same year all in support of our high school football team. Only in Texas.
Back to teaching strategy–
I love the lady’s technique of showing pictures to kids from a large book, pausing, and then without the book explaining the pictures.
Homemade Big Book
While this is wonderful—why not add some real zip! Look at the big book in the photo. There is very little information on two very large pages. This book could be made with poster board or even a cardboard box.
Now about the body parts—If you take pictures of the kids periodically, you will have just what you need to make your Big Book of Five Senses. It would even be extra fun for kids to try to identify the people who belong to each body part.
How About the Clown
Fungus is a real clown who visits hospitals, nursing homes and schools. He usually has Spanish Moss hanging off of his hat which perfectly depicts his name, “Fungus.”
If dressing as a clown is not something you feel comfortable doing–just go with the fun big book. Maybe you can work up to being a clown.
I hope you find this video helpful. I certainly enjoyed it.
