Standing Wave

standing-vibrationA wave pattern produced when identical waves traveling in opposite directions combine is called a standing wave.

Antinodes: The points in a standing wave with maximum vibration.

Nodes: The points in a standing wave that are relatively stationary.

Did You Know?

1. If paper clips are placed on a vibrating string at antinodes, the paper clips  will spin around the string.
2. If paper clips are attached on a vibrating string at nodes, the paper clips  may vibrate some but they will not spin around the string.
