Question: What is the scientific method?
Generally the Scientific Method is defined as a list of steps used in solving a science problem. These steps are shown in order in the diagram.
I would define the scientific method as any process for solving a science related problem. But, since the Scientific Method is stressed, use it, but don’t let it take the fun out of discovering answers.
The scientific method seems to be a stumbling block for some instead of a guide.
Following are tips for teaching the scientific method so that it is a guide to solve problems instead of being a problem.
1. DON’T introduce all the steps of the scientific method at once–it is a bit overwhelming in one big dose.
2. Please DON’T make kids memorize the steps in order–at least not until they have used them for several months and understand the whole problem-solving process.
2. DO Identify the steps as they are used. In other words, after completing an investigation, point out the different parts of the problem-solving method used.
