The color of a flower depends on who or what is viewing the flower. The top photo show the flowers as perceived by a person with color vision. The bottom photo shows the pattern revealed to bees, who are sensitive to ultraviolet light. The pattern on the flower are often called “honey guides” because it is believed that the patterns direct bees to the nectar in the center of the flower.
Color has three basic characteristics, hue, value, and intensity.
Hue: This the name of its color, such as red, green, blue, etc….
Value: The lightness or darkness of a color. With pigment, the value of a color can be changed by adding white to lighten a color and black to darken a color.
Intensity: How bright or dull the color is.
