Chemical Bonds: Covalent
Chemical bonds are simply how the parts of chemicals hook together. Instead of the attachment being a physical attachment, much like a button that hooks into a button hole, chemical bonds are electrical attractions. The attraction is between the electrons and the nuclei of the atoms. This is because electrons have a negative (-) charge and the nuclei of atoms contains protons which have have positive (+) charges.
When two atoms share electrons, the bond is called a covalent bond. Water is an example of a chemical with covalent bonds. In the diagram notice that electrons are shared between the one oxygen atom and both hydrogen atoms.
More about bonding later.
