Chia Seeds: Black/White Size Measurement

By Janice VanCleave

Black Chia Seed Measurements

The diagram shows the average length and width of black chia seeds to be respectively
2.1 mm and 1.3 mm.

Are white and black chia seeds the same size?

Discover for Yourself

Using a magnifying lens and a metric ruler, measure the millimeter length and width of at least 10 white chia seeds.

Record each measurement to the one-tenth place in data chart, such as the one shown. The more seeds you measure, the more accurate will be the average measurement.

How to Calculate the Average Length
1. Add the ten length measurements.
2. Divide the sum by ten.
3. Record the average to the one-tenth place.

How to Calculate the Average Width
1. Add the ten length measurements.
2. Divide the sum by ten.
3. Record the average to the one-tenth place.

Record the average length and width measurements of both the black and white chia seeds in a data chart, such as the one shown. Calculate and record the difference between the measurements.

Are the white chia seeds you measured larger or smaller than the black seeds shown in the diagram?
