Zoology is the study of animals and how they behave, live and survive..
FYI: Special permission is needed to work with live animals as well as parts from dead animals, including bones in designing and developing a science project.
Below is a science fact about Anoles.
This fact is a statement containing: one independent variable and one dependent variable.
An independent variable is changed to see what effect it has on the dependent variable.
How to Develop a Fact into a Science Question
Fact :
Seasonal Changes in Plant Colors Affects an Anoles Degree of Camouflage
Think!
1. Two things are being compared: changes in seasonal plant colors and an anole’s degree of camouflage
independent variable: seasonal plant color changes
dependent variable: effectiveness of animal camouflage
2. In other words, plant colors change with the seasons, but how does this affect how well anoles are camouflaged?
3. Research: Find out more about what plant colors have to do with the lizard being camouflaged.
4. Anoles can change the color of their bodies. Research to find out what the possible colors an anole can change to. Is one color expressed more often? How does the color affect the lizard being camouflaged with plant color changes.
Project Question:
What affect do seasonal environmental colors have on how well anoles are camouflaged?
Hypothesis:
I am making this up–not really sure if anoles are green most of the time, but if they are, then the lizard will be better camouflaged in the spring when there are more green plants.
Experiment:
You need an experiment that gives you quantitative data–this means you need something that you can measure or count.
One idea would be to select a group of people to be your pretend anole predators–something that wants to find -kill-and eat anoles.
The predators are going to try to find as many anoles as possible in a given amount of time.
Prepare pictures of anoles on different background colors, such as the picture above. Be creative and have different anoles of different sizes as well as varying numbers of anoles on the pictures.
You need to further develop this idea so that only one “predator” views the pictures at one time.
