Apple Slice With Star

By Janice VanCleave

Apple on a Cutting Board

Dried apples have unusual, but very interesting characteristics.

Discover For Yourself

Ask an adult to cut an apple in half, cutting across the apple as shown in the diagram.

1. Allow one-half of the apple to dry. Place the apple piece near a window so that it receives direct sunlight if possible. Place something, such as paper, under the apple half to protect the surface the apple sits on.

Note: Air drying can take several weeks, depending on the temperature and humidity. But the final product is worth the wait. You will have a very interesting dehydrated example.

2. From the remaining apple half, cut thin slices. Use a straw to cut a hole in each  slice near its edge. This allows you to add a string and hang the slice so that it can air dry.

Again, time of drying depends on temperature and humidity. Both dehydrated apple pieces can be used a decorations.
