ABOUT THE SOUND PICTURE

With mouth wide open, vibrating air coming up the throat from the vocal chords leaving the open mouth and spreading in all directions. Hi, I am Janice VanCleave, author of 50+ best-selling science experiment books for children ages 4 through high school. I taught science for 27 years and now am creating this science website.   My scream was not staged. The picture was to be of two adult cats, which I was holding. A microsecond before the camera snapped, the two cats dug their claws into my skin as they prepared to leap out of my arms. A picture like this is great for making inferences. Kids could make "guesses" as to why I am screaming. They would be drawing on facts from the photo, such as I look like I am in pain or maybe I am just pretending.

Atomic Number

By Janice VanCleave

Atomic numbers are the ID numbers for all known elements. Each element has its own specific atomic number. For example, in the list of elements note that each has its own atomic number. The atomic number for an element also provides formation an element’s atomic particles. Protons Protons are the positive particles in an atom. […]

Pasteuration

By Janice VanCleave

Pasteurization is a process name for French scientist Louis Pasteur , who discovered the process in the 1860s that undesired fermentation caused by bacteria could be prevented in wine and beer by heating it to 135°F (57°C) for a few minutes. The process is still used for sterilization of liquids such as milk, orange juice, […]

Plant Osmosis

By Janice VanCleave

Plant cells are surrounded by rigid walls made of cellulose (plant fiber), but water can still move through these walls to go in and out of plant cells. This movement of water is called osmosis. When water moves into a plant cell, the cell expands, much like a balloon does when inflated. Unlike a balloon, […]

Science and Verbs?

By Janice VanCleave

Any topic can be used to teach grammar. I am going to use information about the Saguaro cactus to teach verb recognition. Please know, that grammar hasn’t been one of my favorite subjects, but Marian Anders’ book, “My Dog Bites the English Teacher: Practical Grammar Made Quick and Easy“ is changing my mind. Marian has […]

MATH: Measuring

By Janice VanCleave

Young children generally do not understand fractions, but they know when they are given the smaller piece when a candy bar is divided. I love the idea of letting one child divide a candy bar and the other gets to pick his or her portion. What a great way to encourage kids to learn about […]

Scientific Method for Young Kids?

By Janice VanCleave

Scientific Method: How Scientists find answers to problems. Actually, the method can be used by everyone for problems other than those related to science. Even so, I suggest that you encourage kids to be imaginative and to put on their science hat. This of course is a very special hat that could contain all kinds […]
