VanCleave's Science Fun

Your Guide to Science Projects, Fun Experiments, and Science Research

ABOUT THE SOUND PICTURE

With mouth wide open, vibrating air coming up the throat from the vocal chords leaving the open mouth and spreading in all directions. Hi, I am Janice VanCleave, author of 50+ best-selling science experiment books for children ages 4 through high school. I taught science for 27 years and now am creating this science website.   My scream was not staged. The picture was to be of two adult cats, which I was holding. A microsecond before the camera snapped, the two cats dug their claws into my skin as they prepared to leap out of my arms. A picture like this is great for making inferences. Kids could make "guesses" as to why I am screaming. They would be drawing on facts from the photo, such as I look like I am in pain or maybe I am just pretending.

Fluorescent Highlighters

By Janice VanCleave

Fluorescent highlighters are extra bright in sunlight, but not so different than other highlighters under a desk lamp. This is because two bundles of light energy is being sent to your eyes and both are for the same color. This makes the color more intense–louder–brighter–super-bright. Let’s consider a yellow fluorescent highlighter. One source of light […]

Teaching about Gravity using Science Magic

By Janice VanCleave

Using gravity you can cause an unattached rope to seemingly lift a bottle. As with all magic–its a trick. In this trick, gravity is used to pull a ball into place so that it presses so hard against the rope that it cannot move. 1. Ask an adult helper to cut a slit in the […]

Senses: Taste

By Janice VanCleave

I love the taste of lemons. When I was a kid, one of my favorite things to do was to read comic books and eat lemons. Sometimes I ate rind and all. I prepared each lemon by squeezing them so that the juice comes out easily. My technique for preparing my lemons was to place […]

Hypothesis

By Janice VanCleave

A hypothesis is something that everyone gives multiple times each day, but few people can explain what a hypothesis is. Hypotheses are often called “educated guesses.” This means that you have enough experiences and knowledge to figure out the answer to a problem. A hypothesis can also be defined as a prediction about the outcome […]

Forces: Balanced vs. Unbalanced

By Janice VanCleave

Have you ever played tug-of-war? Was there an oozing mud puddle separating the two teams? If so, the people at the ends of the rope wanted to win by pulling the other team into the mud, but not at much as the people next to the mud puddle. It will be these people that fall […]

Astronomy Science Project Ideas

By Janice VanCleave

Astronomy Astronomy is the study of celestial bodies, including asteroids, moons, planets, stars, and suns. Constellation is a common name for a group of stars that if linked by an imaginary line form a pattern.
