I taught science for 27 years and now am creating this science website.   My scream was not staged. The picture was to be of two adult cats, which I was holding. A microsecond before the camera snapped, the two cats dug their claws into my skin as they prepared to leap out of my arms. A picture like this is great for making inferences. Kids could make "guesses" as to why I am screaming. They would be drawing on facts from the photo, such as I look like I am in pain or maybe I am just pretending.

Dust mites are microscopic organisms that feed on human dander (dead skin). They thrive in humid, warm environments. The perfect home for dust mites is in your home. They love areas such as carpet, mattresses, pillows, blankets, curtains, and upholstered furniture.In other words, dust mites live where you live.

Female dust mites lay 25 to 50 eggs and their life span is about three weeks. So, there are lots of living and dead mites in your home.

Question: How can I get rid of dust mites in my home?

Answer:

You cannot totally remove dust mites, but you can reduce their number and studies have shown that this helps those who are allergic to them. Since you spend most of your time in your bedroom, concentrate on keeping this room extra clean. If you have carpet, vacuum it often. Put a dust resistant covering over your mattress and pillows. Wash bedding as often as possible. Also, keep curtains as free from dust as possible. Where there is dust there is most likely dust mites.
