Physics: Radiant Energy

By Janice VanCleave

Energy enables something to do work.

Nothing happens when energy is stored.

Things happen when energy is transferred.

Most things that happen involve many different energy transfers.

Energy is not used up, instead it is transferred from

one form of energy to another.

Energy is needed for every  motion your body makes, from blinking your eyes to skiing down a snow covered mountain.

Basically there are two main types of Energy, one is energy in stationary objects called potential energy (PE), and the other is the energy of moving objects called kinetic energy (KE).

Radiation is a type of KE which moves as waves and can move through space. Electromagnetic Radiation is the group name for all the different types of radiation.   For information about the electromagnetic spectrum, see

ELECTROMAGNETIC Radiation INDEX
