Erosion

By Janice VanCleave

Notes from Janice’s Desk

When traveling, my hubby loves to take back roads. One of the trails leading to a ghost town was a narrow,  single lane, dirt road up a mountain in Colorado. It was fun and exciting until the sudden rainstorm. At first the water made tiny streams down the road but this quickly changed to what looked like a river. I am still amazed that we managed to safely turn around and head down the mountain. It was definitely a first hand experience at seeing the effect of erosion by running water.

Mudflow  Experiment

I was too terrified to take pictures, but the picture shown here reminds me of the experience. Like this picture, it looked peaceful, but when the road started eroding I feared we would be swept away with it. My vivid imagination could visualize the road turning into a mudflow. But thankfully it didn’t.
