The term basin is used for many things, one being a wash basin used to hold water. With indoor plumbing, basins were replaced with what is now called sinks. When you think about it, the word sink describes every type of basin in that they all sink down from their top. Other characteristics:

  1. basins are generally round with a wide open top
  2. basins have sides that slope inward toward their bottom or base

A basin is one type of land form. For information about this type of land form and a fun hands-on investigation, see   GEOGRAPHY:BASINS
