If you have humming bird feeders, you need to hang them out of sight of each other. This is because hummingbirds are very territorial and will aggressively protect nectar sources, be it flowers or your feeders.
For such small birds, they are very fast with an average flight speed of about 25-30 mph, and they can dive up to 60 mph. With that long pointed beak, I wouldn’t want to be in their way.
With a heart beat up to 1,200 beats per minute, these tiny birds need lots of energy, which they get from flower nectar as well as insects. They are certainly busy looking for food and can visit 1,000 flowers per day. They suck the nectar out of flowers using a long, tube-like tongue. The tongue also absorbs nectar much like a paper towel soaks up liquids. Their tongue also has a brush tip which traps insects. They can pull insects out of a spider’s web and capture the spider as well if it cannot get away.
