Altitude Sickness

By Janice VanCleave

Notes from Janice’s Desk

August already?? Wow! It is almost time for the official football season to start. While I like football OK, my husband is an avid fan. Like most, we support our state college and professional teams.human-body1

I don’t have to watch a game to know who is winning. That is always very evident by the volume and tone of my husband’s voice during the game. We have baby monitors at oppfootball-playerosite ends of our house–one in the “man cave” (hubby’s computer/TV room) and one in my office. I am notified when a special play is going to be replayed.

During the end of season playoffs, the professional teams always try hard to have the game at home. There are several reasons for this, one being that the home team doesn’t have to travel so they would be more rested. There can also be physical reasons, such as if the Dallas cowboys play the Denver Broncos. Dallas is close to being at sea level and Denver is at an altitude of about one mile (5, 280 ft). The Dallas players have a harder time breathing. Their problem is called altitude sickness.

What causes altitude sickness? Why doesn’t the Bronco players as well as others living in Denver have altitude sickness? How can altitude sickness be cured?

For answers to these questions, see ALTITUDE SICKNESS.

More Later,

Janice
