ABOUT THE SOUND PICTURE

With mouth wide open, vibrating air coming up the throat from the vocal chords leaving the open mouth and spreading in all directions. Hi, I am Janice VanCleave, author of 50+ best-selling science experiment books for children ages 4 through high school. I taught science for 27 years and now am creating this science website.   My scream was not staged. The picture was to be of two adult cats, which I was holding. A microsecond before the camera snapped, the two cats dug their claws into my skin as they prepared to leap out of my arms. A picture like this is great for making inferences. Kids could make "guesses" as to why I am screaming. They would be drawing on facts from the photo, such as I look like I am in pain or maybe I am just pretending.

Periodic Table Index

1. Calendar: Periodic Table of Days
http://wp.me/pSQZl-6sk
This article is a good introduction to the periodic table. It uses a calendar to introduce periodicity–repeating patterns.

2. Dmitri Mendeleev’s Periodic Table
http://bit.ly/tnjuAT

A follow-up article to Calendar: Periodic Table of Days. It provides history information about the origin of the periodic table of elements. Compares Mendeleev’s first arrangement of the table of elements with current table, which is bases on the periodicity of atomic numbers.

3. Periodic Table: Element Coordinates
https://scienceprojectideasforkids.com/2010/periodic-table-2/

In this article, the group and period number for elements is used as a coordinate, just like on a map. With these location codes, elements can be located on any periodic chart.

Atoms: Atomic Structure

What are atoms made of? Where are the atomic parts located?

Atomic Number: An Element’s ID Numberhttps://scienceprojectideasforkids.com/2010/atomic-number/

Every element has a specific atomic number. No two elements have the same atomic number.

Atomic Particles: Names of Atomic Parts
https://scienceprojectideasforkids.com/2010/atomic-particles-3/

What are nucleons? Protons? Neutrons? Electrons? Where is an atom’s nucleus? What is in the nucleus?

Atomic Particles: How to Draw Atomic Structures
https://scienceprojectideasforkids.com/2010/atomic-particles/

How to use information from the periodic table to draw atomic structures for the atoms of elements.

Atomic Particles: Worksheet
https://scienceprojectideasforkids.com/2010/atomic-particles-2/

What are the different atomic particles in an atom of calcium? Where are the different particles located?

Dynamic Periodic Table

Calendar: Periodic Table of Dayshttps://scienceprojectideasforkids.com/2010/periodic-table-days/

Things that repeat according to a pattern are said to be periodic. For example, on a calendar, the days are in numerical order in rows from left to right. Each week on a calendar  (horizontal row) is one PERIOD. On a calendar, every seventh day falls on the same day.

Periodic Table: Columns and Rows
https://scienceprojectideasforkids.com/2010/periodic-table-of-elements/

What are the names of the different parts of the periodic table.

Periodic Table of Elements
https://scienceprojectideasforkids.com/2010/periodic-table-of-elements/

Using a portion of the periodic table of elements, what elements in a row and elements in columns have in common.

Periodic Table: Elements
https://scienceprojectideasforkids.com/2010/periodic-table-element/

An element is a chemical made up of one kind of atom. The known elements are listed on a chart called the Periodic Table. The elements are not randomly placed on the table. Instead, they are listed in order of their atomic number.

Periodic Table: Groups

The Periodic Table of Elements is arranged so that elements in groups have similar properties, such as their number of valence electrons. Find out how to use the table to determine the valence electrons of elements.

Periodic Table: History

As more and more elements were discovered, chemists saw similarities in them. They noticed that groups of elements had similar properties. Over time, scientists searched for ways to organize elements and many different systems were used. In 1869 the Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleev (1834-1907) developed a system that the modern periodic table arrangement is based on.

Symbols for Natural Elements

chemical symbols

Chemical symbols are abbreviations for the names of elements. Natural elements have symbols represented by one or two letters.

Symbols for Synthetic Elements

https://scienceprojectideasforkids.com/2010/symbols-for-synthetic-elements/ ?

Synthetic means man-made. Synthetic elements have been made by changing the atomic number of another element. These radioactive elements have interesting names and symbols.

Carbon

Carbon: Diamonds to Gashttps://scienceprojectideasforkids.com/2010/diamonds-to-gas/

Can diamonds really burn? If so, at what temperature? What is combustion?
What is needed for combustion?

Carbon Dating With Carbon-14
