ABOUT THE SOUND PICTURE

With mouth wide open, vibrating air coming up the throat from the vocal chords leaving the open mouth and spreading in all directions. Hi, I am Janice VanCleave, author of 50+ best-selling science experiment books for children ages 4 through high school. I taught science for 27 years and now am creating this science website.   My scream was not staged. The picture was to be of two adult cats, which I was holding. A microsecond before the camera snapped, the two cats dug their claws into my skin as they prepared to leap out of my arms. A picture like this is great for making inferences. Kids could make "guesses" as to why I am screaming. They would be drawing on facts from the photo, such as I look like I am in pain or maybe I am just pretending.

Starch in Potaotes

Which is the correct spelling, potato or potatoe?

To this day, my brain sees the word as POT-A-TOE, just like my grandmother taught me.The same with TOM-A-TOE. Actually, I have a long list of words that I misspell no matter how many times I look at the correct spelling. After a time I seem to forget which is the correct spelling–now was it potatoe or potato?

I am thankful that my computer helps me with spelling. YEA! It also helps me with research and I discover so much, such as some potatoes are PURPLE!

I’ve never seen a purple potato, but I can tell you why they are purple.

The color of all foods from plants depends on the type and amount of color pigment they contain. The presence of the pigment called anthocyanin results in food having colors varying from red to purple. Thus, purple potatoes contain anthocyanin as do red apples and  purple cabbage.

Regardless of their color, potatoes differ mainly by the  amount and nature of starch each contains.

The  graph shows the names and amount of starch in two basic types of potatoes:

Baking potatoes are relatively high in starch.
Boiling potatoes are low in starch.
