Predators: Wolves

By Janice VanCleave

wolf-howlingQuestion:

What is the difference between a predator and a prey?

Answer:

blueA predator is an animal that hunts and eats another animal.

Wolves are carnivores, which means they are meat eaters. Being carnivores, wolves hunt and eat other animals, which makes them a predator.

blueA prey is the animal being hunted and eaten by a predator.

Wolves are the predators of these prey: large game, such as elk and moose, but they will eat mice, birds, and even fish if larger prey are not available.

If necessary, wolves will eat carrion (the remains of a dead animal).

The video contains information about wolves and includes information about their being on the endangered list. This means that there are so few of these animals that they may become extinct.

People are afraid of wolves and some use poison to kill these animals. Poison may be the main reason for there being so few wolves today.

button-redAt one time, people were paid to bring in dead wolves. This was called bounty hunting.
