VanCleave's Science Fun

Your Guide to Science Projects, Fun Experiments, and Science Research

ABOUT THE SOUND PICTURE

With mouth wide open, vibrating air coming up the throat from the vocal chords leaving the open mouth and spreading in all directions. Hi, I am Janice VanCleave, author of 50+ best-selling science experiment books for children ages 4 through high school. I taught science for 27 years and now am creating this science website.   My scream was not staged. The picture was to be of two adult cats, which I was holding. A microsecond before the camera snapped, the two cats dug their claws into my skin as they prepared to leap out of my arms. A picture like this is great for making inferences. Kids could make "guesses" as to why I am screaming. They would be drawing on facts from the photo, such as I look like I am in pain or maybe I am just pretending.

Puns

By Janice VanCleave

A pun is a funny use of words. Puns can help kids to remember things they have studied. For examplegravity-pun11, after completing a studying about gravity, kids will know that gravity is a  force that pulls things toward the Earth’s surface–the ground. So they will see the humor in this pun:

“This has been a tough day. Gravity has really pulled me down.”

Element Puns

Element puns are a fun way to introduce a study about the names and symbols of chemical elements. An element pun is one that has to be read. This is because it uses the symbol for an element as part of the statement. The name of the symbol is used when the pun is read.

Example:

Pun: Put one Ne the carpet.
Read as: Put one Neon the carpet.
Meaning: Put one knee on (neon) the carpet.

Read the following puns. Can you interpret them?

1. I will kill the bugs and Ba.
2.
The F this room is made of wood.
3. Diamonds  S a lot of money.
4. The medicine will He.
5. What do you Zn about elemental puns?

Make up your own elemental puns using elements, such as:
argon, copper, radon
