Notes from Janice’s Desk
In the United States, science fair projects generally start in autumn. Even though this is not our plant growing season indoors plant projects work very well.
Botany is the study of plants. The picture shows tomato plants grown from seeds planted at different times. This is one way to compare the growth of plants. For very young learners it not only allows them to visually compare plant development, but it introduces or reinforces time sequences.
Instead of planting the seeds at different times, photographs can be taken to show the development of the plants during specific periods of time. It is important that the experiment be repeated four or more times. To do this, prepare four or more identical containers of soil and plant seeds from the same seed source in each. Make sure that you treat each container the same. Meaning that they get the same amount of light, water, etc….
