Scientific Method: Data

DATA refers to collected information.

Types of Data:

Research Data: Information collected from reading as well as from exploratory experiments.

Cause-Effect Experimental Data: Recorded results of an experiment.

Data can be collected in many different ways, including these:

(1) Written descriptions of observations

(2) Photographs of experimental results

(3) Diagrams: computer generated and/or hand drawn

(4) Tables with measurements and/or descriptions

A data chart might look like the one shown here. Notice that not only does the chart have colors to compare, it also gives imformtion about what happens with each test.

Once experimental data has been collected, you need to ANALYZE (to study) and determine what it means. This is called the Results. To find out more about experimental results:
