Seed Parts

By Janice VanCleave

The diagram shows shows the inside of a pinto bean. The embryo is the part of the bean seed that develops into a bean plant. The remaining part, called the cotyledon, is the food for the developing embryo.

Use the diagram to identify the following parts of the embryo.

embryo –the immature plant inside a seed, which is the earliest stage of development of an organism.

hypocotyl-the end of the embryo beneath the point of attachment.

radicle – the end of the hypocotyl that develops into root system.

epicotyl- the end of the embryo above the point of attachment that develops into the shoot system of the plant, which contains the plant’s stem, leaves, flowers, and fruit.

plumule–tiny, immature leaves located at the tip of the epicotyl that at maturity form the first true leaves of the plant.
