Slaves to the Clock

By Janice VanCleave

Notes from Janice’s Desk

I wake during the night to go to the bathroom (I drink lots of liquids). Generally I go back to sleep, but today the clock said 5:30 am. I decided to stay up even though I felt a bit sleepy.  This decision cranked up my brain and as usual it started twirling with ideas from yesterday. With a cup of java I was back in place–in front of my computer.

A couple hours later  my office clock read 4 am. WHAT? I checked the electric clock in my bedroom and it read 7:30–had the time been flashing earlier? Confirming that it was 4:30am, I suddenly felt tired and sleepy. Isn’t it amazing how we respond to clock readings? When I thought it was 5:30 am I was able to wake up and start working like I normally do at 6am. I am a slave to the time on my clock—I might eat lunch at 9 am if the clock reads 12:00 pm.

My office is now across the hall from my bedroom, so even if I wake at 2am I can have fun writing stuff. In fact, describing my experience in going to work early gives me a great idea for amath problem. See it HERE.
