Your Guide to Science Projects, Fun Experiments, and Science Research

ABOUT THE SOUND PICTURE

With mouth wide open, vibrating air coming up the throat from the vocal chords leaving the open mouth and spreading in all directions. Hi, I am Janice VanCleave, author of 50+ best-selling science experiment books for children ages 4 through high school. I taught science for 27 years and now am creating this science website.   My scream was not staged. The picture was to be of two adult cats, which I was holding. A microsecond before the camera snapped, the two cats dug their claws into my skin as they prepared to leap out of my arms. A picture like this is great for making inferences. Kids could make "guesses" as to why I am screaming. They would be drawing on facts from the photo, such as I look like I am in pain or maybe I am just pretending.

Tips for Homeschool Science

By Janice VanCleave

The insect model is of a water strider. Surface tension as well as physical structures of the insect affect the insect's ability to float on the water.

Hi, I am Janice VanCleave. My goal is to create homeschool material on my website to provide ideas that will work for you. Many homeschoolers ask for ideas to expand experiments. In response to this, I have designed teaching tips that can be adapted to even the simplest experiment. But, these are just my ideas […]

Surface Tension Science Project

By Janice VanCleave

What Are the Variables in “Float a Needle” from “Science Wizardry for Kids” by Margaret Kenda.   “Floating a Needle” is an exploratory investigation about surface tension. Surface tension is the property of liquids in which the exposed surface acts as if a thin skin has been pulled across it. This property is due […]

DNA: Project Hypothesis

By Janice VanCleave

Step 5 Hypothesis Let’s assume that your science project question is: So, what do you think? Will using different kinds of fruit affect the amount of DNA extracted from the fruit cells? Your guess about the answer is called your hypothesis, and it should be more than just a wild guess. Instead, your hypothesis should […]

Hypothesis

By Janice VanCleave

A hypothesis is something that everyone gives multiple times each day, but few people can explain what a hypothesis is. Hypotheses are often called “educated guesses.” This means that you have enough experiences and knowledge to figure out the answer to a problem. A hypothesis can also be defined as a prediction about the outcome […]
