Solubility Graph

By Janice VanCleave

I am always searching for new, fun crystal growing recipes. Crystals of table sugar and table salt are favorites, mainly because the chemicals are so readily available. The solubility graph shown provides information about the amount of sugar and salt that can be dissolved at different temperatures. When you mix sugar and water, the mixture […]

Saturated Solution

By Janice VanCleave

Question from Anthony & Glynnis How many Alkaseltzer tablets can dissolve in water? Facts to Consider: AlkaSeltzer + water produces water + salt + carbon dioxide gas The carbon dioxide gas escapes leaving the salt dissolved in the water, this is called a salt solution. Saturated Salt Solution = A solution made by adding salt […]

What is a Supersaturated Solution?

By Janice VanCleave

Each solution is a mixture of sugar (sucrose) and water. Sugar is the solute and water the solvent. Solution A has twice as much sugar added to the same amount of water as does solution B. Thus, Solution A is more concentrated than is Solution B. You can also say that of the two solutions, A and B, Solution B is more dilute.

What is a Solution? How do You Saturated A Solution? A solution is  a homogeneous mixture, meaning it is the same throughout. A solution can be made of more than two substance, with one of the substances being the solvent and the substances that dissolve in the solvent are called solutes. You make and use […]

Perfume Notes

By Janice VanCleave

Question: Why do perfumes smell different? Answer: Perfume is a generic term used for liquids with a distinctive pleasant smell. A more scientific definition is that perfume is a liquid solution, which is a mixture of a liquid solvent and different solutes. The liquid solvent for perfumes is generally ethanol (alcohol) or a mixture of […]
