What is a Polymer?

By Janice VanCleave

Polymer Model

This chain of varied colored links is a simple representation of a polymer. Like the chain, a polymer is made of single units that are linked together.

If you break the word “polymer” in half you get “poly” and “mer.”

poly = many AND mer = a single unit

polymer= many single units linked together

The single units that link together to form a polymer are called monomers.

What Things are Made of Polymers?

Follow are but a few types of polymers. Can you add to this list?

rubber wheels on toys, bicycles, and vehicles

proteins and starches
