Your Guide to Science Projects, Fun Experiments, and Science Research

ABOUT THE SOUND PICTURE

With mouth wide open, vibrating air coming up the throat from the vocal chords leaving the open mouth and spreading in all directions. Hi, I am Janice VanCleave, author of 50+ best-selling science experiment books for children ages 4 through high school. I taught science for 27 years and now am creating this science website.   My scream was not staged. The picture was to be of two adult cats, which I was holding. A microsecond before the camera snapped, the two cats dug their claws into my skin as they prepared to leap out of my arms. A picture like this is great for making inferences. Kids could make "guesses" as to why I am screaming. They would be drawing on facts from the photo, such as I look like I am in pain or maybe I am just pretending.

Science Games and Crafts

By Janice VanCleave

Hi,

I am Janice VanCleave, and I write science experiment books for kids and educators.

I am developing a Free! Science Website for kids and educators. After seeing the lesson plans on “Search PlanIt,” I want to add science lessons for different grade levels.

OH! I forgot to say that I want science lessons that only use games and crafts. Kids of all ages can “Play and Find Out About Science.”

I am looking for playmates. Educators from pre-K through high school who think or would like to think “outside the box.”

What we create will be posted free for others to use.

STOP!! I need to at least give you an example.

I teach a Bible class at a nursing home and I often prepare activities that support the lesson.

Bible Application:

John 1:3

I took a basketful of different 3-D foam stick-ons and colored index cards. Truth is that I was experimenting to see how many of the folks could peel off the back and place the sticker on the colored index card. WOW! I was so pleasantly surprised. Even those with limited manual dexterity, figured out ways to do this. They were so very excited about the 3-D pictures they made. I framed them by gluing them to colored construction paper.

Science Application:

Physical Properties of Course: Shapes, color, size, plane or solid figures, etc…..

But, I found foam shapes with real butterfly designs on them. WOW! What fun. Kids can create any picture with the selection of stickers available to them, ideas for butterfly metamorphosis (another possible craft), etc…………etc…Remember–only games and craft activities.

Fish for Questions: Using a dowel rod with a string and magnet attached, kids can catch paper fish with questions on them. Of course the fish has a paper clip on it so that it is attracted to the magnet. Teams can compete.

My ADD brain is spinning with ideas.

Not sure how I ever finished one book, much less over 50. Must have been my whip-snapping editor. Without her I have a website with about 400 articles I’ve started and never finished. One thought leads to another and I am off in a different direction.

With your help, I can stay on track and create lessons that you and your class will love.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Welcome to Janice’s Science Extravaganza!

The spoon hanging from the string vibrates when struck and these vibrations are transmitted through the string and the sound is amplified by the plastic cups.
